The world of ANOMA

In 2048, a classified experiment at Harvard set out to unlock human potential. It was meant to save the world. It produced something else: ANOMA — a life form with no fixed shape, whose appearance and nature change according to whoever discovers it.

If every observer sees a different creature, then no single lab can observe it objectively. The researchers' workaround was a field study across universities: if one observation cannot be trusted, gather tens of thousands of them and treat the distribution as the truth.

The rankings on this site are that experiment, still running.

Timeline

Early 2040s
A research program launches under the banner of unlocking human potential. It was an experiment meant to save the world.
2048
In a Harvard laboratory, the first ANOMA is observed as a by-product of a classified animal experiment.
Shortly after 2048
ANOMA is found to change its shape and nature for each observer. Researchers conclude that no single lab can observe the whole of it.
Present day
The inter-university Field Study begins. Students become observers, collecting ANOMA Fragments to generate ANOMA. Discovery counts become the School and World rankings.

The individual seen by the first observer is recorded as the purest reflection of the researcher himself. He stopped observing and disappeared from the record. His ANOMA vanished with him, but no observer remains who could prove it.

Glossary

ANOMA
A new life form born as a by-product of the experiment. It has no shape until observed, and takes a different form for each observer. Its name derives from whoever discovered it.
ANOMA Fragment
The material used to generate an ANOMA. Earned by clearing a puzzle.
Observer
A student taking part in the experiment. That is, the player.
School
A university-level observation site. The unit the rankings are tallied by.
World
A league at the country or regional level.
Field Study
The framework in which universities compete on ANOMA discovery counts. It is what the rankings on getanoma.com actually are.
Non-Observation
The only way to erase an ANOMA: a state in which no one observes it. It has never been carried out.
